Strategic and Economic Constraints at Apple (LINK)

Here's a report on Steve Jobs talking about some constraints Apple sees as they pursue innovation in three product areas (i.e., blue ray DVD, touchscreens, and "net-tops"). I believe the constraints he sees around blueray (expensive, complex licensing), but am not sure I buy the "touchscreens hasn't made a lot of sense to us" constraint. Sounds like subjective dismissal versus being a true constraint. Any thoughts?

  1. More evidence that Apple's innovation may be lagging: competitors developing tablet Macbooks (www.axitron.com, not touchscreen yet), cheap substitutes (www.psystar.com), and feature laden alternatives to the Airbook (http://www.voodoopc.com/#/productsenvy). Apple's reaction to the cheap substitute should be particularly telling as their response has been to force constraints on innovators through legal action.

  2. Why haven't touchscreens made a lot of sense for Apple notebooks? In what context do they not make sense? Touchscreens certainly seemed to make sense for the ipod touch and the iphone.

Here's an article that someone sent me the other day: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/why-the-ipod-is-doomed.aspx?GT1=33002
It seems like other companies are trying new approaches to digital music and accessibility. I'd be curious to know Apple's response to music moving to "the cloud."

  3. I agree that Jobs' comment is dismissive at best--particularly considering that Apple has been a leader in touchscreen innovation in the industry. Perhaps this is more of a resource constraint. I'm certain that Jobs is aware that his comments are quite influential in the industry. Perhaps his strategy is to publicly quash the innovation until he has the proper resources to devote to it, thus deterring competitors from developing this technology and beating him to market with the product.
The comment that the innovation isn't valuable because a keyboard is required for long term usage is also weak. With Apple's technology, I'm sure that a virtual keyboard could be included as an option.
