Get Your Butt Out of Bed (Burdick, Jasevicius, Sikca)
Can’t get up in the morning? Constantly late . . . for everything? No fear the Get Your Butt out of Bed team is at your service. We offer three unique services to cater to your every waking up need.
First, we offer personalized wake up calls to our clients at predetermined times programmed on our website up to one month in advance. These personalized calls can be celebrities, family members or even pets. For example, say you need to get up in the morning and work out, whom better than Mr. T to call you and wake you up in the morning with a personalized wakeup call just for you.
If that isn't your personal preference, but you are motivated to get up in the morning and work out, try our personal training program. This program is uniquely designed just for you and starts with a personality and goal profile prior to your workout sessions. We then calculate compatibility to match you with the perfect personal trainer in the morning. In addition to having the perfect compatibility with your trainer they will come to your home and train you, to eliminate any unnecessary effort on your part. Ohh did we mention to compatibility part also calculates what type of man you are interested in and then we work to match your trainer also based on attraction levels. You would be a fool to stay in bed when you can work out with a hottie in the morning.
Lastly, if the top two do not suit your needs we will force you out of bed with our deflatable, super uncomfortable pillows. These patented pillows lose all support and become lumpy and smelly as soon as your alarm clock goes off. With every hit of the snooze button the stench become worse and worse until you are running from your bed. Once you turn your alarm clock off and you are out of bed the pillow returns to its normal state and all pillow odors are eliminated.

Solution #2 is most appealing to me. This solution is two-fold in that it facilitates your getting out of bed while encouraging you to work out- two activities for which many may need extra motivation.
ReplyDeleteI do not like solution #3, as I would likely spend most of my morning resenting the pillow-maker. Plus, I don't sleep with a pillow and posit there may be others in this situation.
Depending on who your client is, he/she likely has personal preferences for waking up, so I like that you've tried to customize your solutions. However, it's hard to provide specific feedback without knowing more about the client's constraints.
ReplyDeleteI like the workout idea because it addresses two issues, but I wonder about the cost of a personal trainer (if your client is a broke MBA student).
I'd probably throw the pillow out after the first morning!
I also worry that you might not be able to get Mr. T on the phone by the end of the mod...
Macee...who doesn't sleep with a pillow? haha
ReplyDeleteI feel like you could get Mr.T to record his voice or a celebrity to do so, but it will require building a database of these individuals which might take some time. You could also dub their voices from Movies, but that might be illegal without their consent.
I like #1. I would suggest thinking up some more ideas. What about blinds that automatically rise after 10 minutes or maybe a blue tooth device that switches the alarm to a differnt part of the room so that you have to get up to turn it off. You could also use RFID tags to track the individuals movements. If there are in the bed longer than 10 minutes past the alarm the service will call you and wake you up.
Wake Up calls are a pretty good idea and I can see it happening, since hotels are already successfully doing it. The system will be relying on two things though:
ReplyDelete1. the phone of the client needs to be turned on (what if he/she forgets to charge it)
2. the IT system that tracks all the calls needs to work flawlessly (you don't want to have people wake up at noon...)
I think the customization with celebreties is fun. I would love to have George Clooney call me everyday!
Macee, I don't sleep with pillows either. Even if I did, I would just throw them off the bed, once they start to smell (what kind of smell? And how does that work??).
About the personal trainer (coming from a former personal trainer) issue : That could be very pricy, but if the client is willing to pay, it is a great solution. Most male personal trainers are at least semi attractive, which makes it easier to create a database with enough trainers.
Look, I really like pillows so I'm a no-vote on the crappy pillow idea. However.... I can't think of anything better than solutions 1 and 2. If someone would call me and tell me to get my ass out of bed AND get to the gym.... that would be great. Being fat sucks and I would love that.
ReplyDeleteAs a chronic snooze hitter, I appreciate your project! My problem is that it is just too easy to hit snooze (or hang up on a celebrity), so what I would need is an incentive/punishment like your third option, but I have some concern over the life span/feasibility of the pillow as it will be an engineering feat and lord knows I can adapt to smells (not sure where I was going with that). Maybe combining a task with getting the snooze button to shut off would help me get out of bed. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a trivia challenge or pedometer.
ReplyDeleteI like option 2 the best--it's hard to stay in bed when you have someone coming to your house to wake you. It's even better than having an AM appt with a trainer at the gym because those are easy to call and cancel. Price would be the only drawback--but then, would it be much more than traditional personal training? Maybe not.
ReplyDeleteI also like the wake-up call option. People already pay money for special ring tones, musical interludes, etc on their phones. Maybe they would pay to hear their fav celebrity at 6am too? Like Jesse mentioned though--there may need to be some kind of "snooze" option incorporated. Maybe three such calls 8 minutes apart with increasingly obnoxious messages and celebrities?
Not wild about the stinky pillow idea--might make my hair smelly.
Can I have a "stay in bed" option?? There are quite a few Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays that i would give anything for someone to take out my dog instead of me! I like the pillow thing- because as a habitual snoozer and lover of my bed, I think that would be the only thing to get me out. However- instead of stinky- how about energizing smelling salts??
ReplyDeleteWhile I would agree with most of the previous posts in that this is a great issue to tackle but I think there are a ton of people out there with this problem, I'm not sure if there is anything really effective here except for the third option.
ReplyDeleteThe first option would probably be a good laugh, but I'm probably just as likely to get out of bed either way if Mr. T calls me or my mother calls me - thought it was funny though.
The second option sounds like a great idea in general, but these sort of things already exist and the problem of getting out of the bed in the morning also still exists. So, while having this sort of system will probably increase my drive to actually go work out, I don't know if it would get me out of bed every morning.
This last idea seemed like it would probably be most effective to me, assuming two things. First, that this is a plausible idea. Second, the side effects are minimal. Like the previous posts have stated: if it makes the room smell the rest of the day, makes me smell the rest of the day, etc. then I will probably not use the product, but if you all have figured out how to make the pillow "return to its normal state and all pillow odors are eliminated" then I'd say go for it - you know I'll be running!
I really do have this problem...a lot, so once you guys figure it out, I would love to be a tester if you need one - haha. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI definitely like idea #3. However, it would be more effective if the pillow did not return to its normal state: it would be impossible to sleep and therefore one would not have any problem to wake up! ;-)
ReplyDeleteFor idea #1, the personalized calls should change every day or regularly because the client could get used to the same personalized call and stay in bed.
I think the first idea is a good alternative to the regular wake up call and timed clock. Besides the personalized calls, it would be fantastic to be able to incorporate the personal calendar schedule into the online programe and it can be synched automatically if any changes happened.
ReplyDeleteAs for the smelly pillow, in case that you might spoil the whole day of your customer, it is better to trim this attribute off your super uncomfortable pillow. Instead, a vibration feature might work much better.:)
I love Ann's idea to change the pillow scent to something energizing.
ReplyDeleteThe idea to have a personal trainer come to your house sounds like it could work. Maybe you can combine this with option 1 and have the hottie trainer first call the client, then arrive at her house.
I think #1 is a GREAT idea, but i would be concerned about implementation by the end of the mod.I think its really cool to have the option to set the preferences online, and then just forget about it.
ReplyDeleteI think #2 is also a great idea that is easy to put into effect. A simple interview, etc will determine the clients preferences for workout.
Good problem. Not sure who the client is based on your description, but I'll assume it is an Owen student. You've got a few invention ideas there that are actually pretty neat. ((also check out: http://www.geeksugar.com/89786 to see another approach to the problem)). Is the problem here that you forget to set the alarm or that you just don't want to get up? Your solution #1 seems to solve the "I forgot" problem whereas your other solutions solve the "I'm allergic to morning" problem. You may want to sort that out as different constraints will be present in each.
ReplyDeleteYou should check out jott.com to see (and appropriate) some service-technology that could serve some of the needs you are poking at. Since implementation is an issue here, you'll want to build on readily available components as you build your solution. (Using jott you can create a schedule to send yourself a reminder text every morning.) Not sure if you can get it to call you every day, but am certain that such a service must exist somewhere...
The personal trainer idea is intriguing but sounds a bit aggressive for our time line. (I think someone above pointed this out as well.)
Anyway, that's my 2 cents! Good work and good luck!!
#2 and #3 are interesting ideas that get at the heart of the problem - trying to create new incentives for people to get out of bed in the morning. But if the nuisance is easy to stop (e.g. hitting a snooze bar, or throwing a smelly pillow across the room), then it limits its effectiveness. The time constraint might be kind of tough for the pillow idea too, unless you have some secret technology waiting in the wings...
ReplyDeleteI really like idea #1. I absolutely hate working out, much less first thing in the morning. And, I really don't want some hottie watching me struggle 30 minutes after I've rolled out of bed.
ReplyDeleteBut, #1 allows me to set a wake-up call and maybe even get a funny message on the other end. Who doesn't want to wake up to a joke or funny story? Also, as a twist on the wake-up call, how about an Outlook invitation or email? My phone makes all sorts of noises when I get an Outlook invitation, so maybe 15 minutes before the phone call I get an invitation to wake-up. Then I know I'll get a call in a few minutes and can prepare for the loud ring.
One question: what happens if I have my phone on silent? Will you keep calling until I pick up the phone?
