Have you ever bought anything under the Coleman brand for a camping trip? How about used Comet for house cleaning? These brands along with others like Right Guard and Sure deodorant are a few of the many spun off by large consumer products firms when they tire of promoting old brands. Smaller firms often buy these brands at a bargain and reinvigorate them through innovation.
There is an article on this business practice and the use of innovation in reviving these brands in the Marketplace section of Friday's WSJ. It's often as simple as new colors or flavors. I thought the coolest innovation was Chloraseptic's dissolvable strips for sore throat relief.
