Information on Monitors

  1. Student Life / Vanderbilt: Often times business school students overlook their connection with the larger Vanderbilt community so this is a great opportunity to connect. However, there are added difficulties in this approach. As opposed to an approach that focuses more on Owen information, or student-driven content, this approach requires additional coordination with outside sources beyond Owen. This could create a litany of constraints that effect the content including technology, organizational, societal, and group. I really like the idea behind your project though and would recommend polling the Owen students and faculty to find out what they want to see more of on the monitors. This may help better focus content generation ideas towards what stakeholders value most.

  2. Concept 4 – Student Life - Vanderbilt
I am afraid that a lot of the mentioned information may be perceived as redundant by students. We are regularly updated what is going on by email. Showing this information (e.g. weekend at Vandy) would not really yield any additional information and it may not really lead to more people paying attention to that kind of information (simply, if I’m interested, I’ll read the email anyways).
However, I do think that updates on sport games (e.g. what was the score of the last game, when is the next one?) or more general information like VUPD notices may make a lot of sense and would attract readers’ interest.
To reduce the efforts for prioritization I suggest keeping the included variety of topics small. This could mean only showing information that changes infrequently (e.g. sport scores or the gym schedule).

  3. Concept 5 - There is a general feeling at Owen that there is no single place to go to get information. ODN serves as a morning announcements, What's Happening is a recap of the weeks events and seeks to highlight some activities at school (but readership tends to be low for both, or so we're led to believe). Then there are the many, many, many emails that come from various offices and organizations around the school. While I think your concepts seeks to offer a way to gather that and really could be helpful, my concern is that students would have to stand in front of the monitors and stare for quite some time in order to consume all of the information for that day. Mobile technology has changed the way we consume media and I wonder if an Owen App that brings all this together and keep everyone informed on the go.

  4. Concept 4 - While I like the idea of keeping Owen more informed about what is going on at Vandy, I feel that this will mostly be ignored. As it is, that is at least what I do with most of this information as it comes to me via email (and I get the impression that I'm not alone in doing so). My personal exception would be the gym schedule, I'd love to see that, but I can also grab it on my phone without much difficulty.
What I love about this idea is the connection to other graduate schools, which may be harder to keep updated. It would be awesome to be more connected with the events going on at the Law School and Peabody since we do have common interests. And with the sports information, while you may not really want to show a whole sports game, it would be nice to see updates of how the various teams are doing (aka final scores), but then you would still have to pick and chose which ones to show.
I think you have some great ideas between both concepts here, it's just picking a smaller set of information (the screens get viewed for just a few seconds at a time, in passing) and figuring out what people are really looking for, and then what is easiest to collect and restate.

  5. Concept 5:
The idea in general looks good. As you mentioned, it is important to prioritize the content because there are many information to show in the TV´s. My feedback is to identify in which monitors are you going to show every topic, for example to choose the monitor near the cafeteria for showing Owen statistics, the monitor in the library for profile students, the 1st floor monitor for events, etc. In this way will be easy for the students to look for specific information.

  6. Concept 5: I would definitely love to see a more streamlined approach for Owen communications. However, to echo some of the above comments, this idea seems incredibly time consuming to produce and update. I think to get all of the data that you are looking for would require extensive coordination between many faculty members and students to compile and edit this information and I'm not sure that students would see a benefit large enough to offset the additional effort required.

I am interested in all contents proposed by this concept. Other advantage is that they are simple news can be processed in just seconds screening the screen.
The likely constraint is how and who to get the information.
